Experience

I have an extensive background in working with children, high school students, and college students, both in the context of school settings and otherwise. In my personal life I have spent a great deal of time helping children to experience new things and grow in faith. I direct a youth group for my Episcopal Church, where I spend a great deal of time with "my kids," participating extracurricular non-religious in activities ranging from teaching rock climbing to leading overnight lock-in camps. I adore my youth group children and will always be there for them without reservation, whether it be academic help needed, one-on-one time to be a good role model, or simply attending a school play just to show my support and care. Academically, I am always solid and outspoken in my commitment. I have tutored many subjects, including reading and writing (in both English and Spanish), physical sciences, environmental sciences, music, public speaking and presenting, and art. I have also worked one-on-one with children and peers who are emotionally struggling with a variety of different situations; it being my goal to provide them with support both academically and in being encouraging and understanding of their given situation. It is a passion of mine to teach and find ways in which each individual student can flourish and succeed. No student is incapable of success; it is simply a matter of finding their personal learning style and strength and then nurturing it to success. Personally, it is my goal to spend my life learning, teaching, educating, and helping others. I want to become the best that I can be, both personally and professionally, and it is my goal to assist students in also discovering their inner power and potential. Teaching has been a passion of mine since a young age. While in elementary and middle school I would frequently spend my lunch hours and after school helping fellow students to better understand classwork that they were struggling with. My ambition continued into my high school and college experience, where I tutored individuals, lead study groups, and assisted in classroom teaching. As I embark on my graduate school experience, my goal is to eventually become a professor or school teacher. I would like to gain as much teaching experience as possible while I am still in school in order to ensure that I will be teaching at a level that will be most beneficial to both me and my students. I am a very optimistic, glass-is-half-full individual and I truly believe in the power of our youth. I enjoy spending time listening to the ideas and dreams of the young, and in helping to foster such ambition.

Hobbies

I take life one day at a time and enjoy getting to know everyone – I feel that each individual has something they can teach the world, and I’m always looking to learn, help and grow. I am one of seven children. Coming from a large family taught me that everyone learns differently, and therefore needs to have their individual needs specifically identified and addressed in order to achieve their highest potential. After spending many years teaching and tutoring, I am very confident in my ability to help students build not only their academic success, but also confidence. It is my goal in tutoring students to provide them with the tools they’ll need to move forward successfully – that is, not only to help them with the given subject they’re seeking tutoring in, but also assist in organizational skills and in learning how to address academic concerns in the future before they feel they are behind or overwhelmed. I love to smile and laugh, but I give 100% to the individual I work with and I expect the same honest effort in return. I frequently receive e-mails from students I tutored years ago asking me to proofread college application papers or senior essays – I’m quite proud of my group of students (past and present) and am always happy to add more to my academic family.
